NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT

1. An election is to be held of Parish Councillors for each of the Parishes or Parish Wards as indicated in the Schedule below.

2. Nomination papers must be delivered to the Returning Officer, South Lakeland House, Lowther Street, Kendal LA9 4UQ, on any day after the date of this Notice, on Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm (excluding bank holidays) but no later than 4pm on THURSDAY, 7 APRIL 2016.

3. Nomination Papers may be obtained from the offices of the Returning Officer at the same address, during the times stated above, or from the person named in the Schedule below, who will, at the request of any elector for the electoral area, prepare a Nomination Paper for signature.

4. If any election is contested, the poll will take place on THURSDAY, 5 MAY 2016.

5. Electors should take note that:

•  applications to register to vote must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at South Lakeland House, Lowther Street, Kendal LA9 4UQ, by MONDAY, 18 APRIL 2016
•  applications for new postal votes or applications to change or cancel an existing postal or proxy vote must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 5pm on TUESDAY, 19 APRIL 2016
•  applications for new proxy votes must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 5pm on TUESDAY, 26 APRIL 2016.

6. Applications to vote by emergency proxy at this election on the grounds of physical incapacity or for work/service reasons must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 5pm on polling day, 5 May 2016. The physical incapacity must have occurred after 5pm on 26 April 2016. To apply on the grounds of work/service, the person must have become aware that they cannot go to the polling station in person after 5pm on 26 April 2016.

Cumbria Police campaign against Child Sexual Exploitation

Cumbria Constabulary is committed to preventing child sexual exploitation, helping victims and bringing offenders to justice. It is a crime that can affect any child, anytime, anywhere - regardless of their social or ethnic background.

It involves offenders grooming young people and using their power to sexually abuse them. It can take many forms, whether it occurs through a seemingly 'consensual' relationship with an older boyfriend, or a young person having sex in return for attention, gifts, alcohol or cigarettes.

Sexual exploitation is child abuse and, although they may not realise it, it puts the young victim at huge risk of damage to their physical, emotional and psychological health.

Many young people who are being abused do not realise they are at risk and will not call for help. They may see themselves as willing participants when in fact their behaviour is anything but consenting. And, while there is no stereotypical victim of exploitation, there are warning signs in children's behaviour that may indicate something is wrong – and if you know what you're looking for, you can take steps to help them.

Notice from the Parish Council

It has come to the Council's attention that horse manure is being dumped beside the roads at many different locations in the parish. As fly tipping, it is a criminal offence under the terms of The Clean
Neighbourhood and Environment Act. This unsightly and noxious mess is now attracting other forms of fly tipping.The council asks residents to be watchful and if the offender is seen carrying out this offence that the vehicle registration is taken and reported to the Police (call 101) or South Lakeland District Council (01539 733333) so appropriate action can be taken.

Family Easter Bingo 18th March at BMH

Burton Children's Sports Committee presents: A Family Easter Bingo on Friday 18th March at the Burton Memorial Hall, doors open 6:30pm eyes down 7:30pm. Your compere without compare, Julian "one little duck" Rowley will be calling the numbers. Licensed bar serving beers and wine. Hot sausage buns will be served along with tea, coffee and cakes. Raffle and cash flyer. Kids Easter colouring competition to be judged on the night, colouring sheets will be available in school and at pre-school soon. Would be nice too see lots of family's support this event as all proceeds go towards the children's events that are put on during the course of the year.

Weather for astronomers

Today we have added a new panel below this one, which gives information about weather and visibility from a website called Clear Outside. The difference being that this one is aimed at astronomers.

The info covers all aspects of the weather that is of interest to stargazers and those who enjoy taking photos of the skies at night, but will also prove useful to others who want specific and accurate (well as accurate as we can hope for!) information about the weather.

So whether it is cloud cover, rain or frost our new panel will keep you informed.

As a bonus if you go to the Clear Outside website and see the info there it will also tell you if the International Space Station is due for a pass overhead - how neat is that?!

Now you have no excuse for not knowing when you can take pics of the moon or those meteor showers or other sky objects. :)

Library van dies, library book drop begins

The nearest library to our village is 5 miles away, so Burton was visited weekly on a Monday for an hour by a mobile library van which parked in the memorial hall car park. It was very well-used, by many people from older people to mums with small kids, for all of whom it saved the hassle, time and expense of a trip on the bus or by car into the nearest library to borrow or order books.

Late last year the library van developed a fault which meant it was withdrawn from service - as a replacement would cost c.£100,000, according to county council, and as they are cutting back due to reduced grants etc. from govt., we faced having no library presence in the village.

For many years on the first Monday of the month a group of volunteers have been running a library coffee morning at the same time as the van visited, and this raised funds to help with the village hall's upkeep. Loss of library van put the coffee morning at risk, so the volunteers got together and decided to approach the county council to ask if there could be a book drop at the hall instead of the library van. 

After several meetings with the county library service to hash out the details there is now a book drop service to replace the library van. A large folding bookcase is stored in the village hall into which the library service will drop off 200 books every so often and take the old batch away, and the volunteers run this village library on the first and third Mondays each month, with the option to increase to every Monday if demand justifies it.

It's still a very new service, but is worth trying to keep access to books going within the village. What would be even better would be if the county council could be persuaded to allow the village hall to be a library link, which would require the use of a computer terminal to access the online services which are only available in libraries and library links, e.g. reference and genealogy resources. But at least for now the books are accessible easily still.

Lakeland Wildlife Oasis flood appeal

The local little charity, Lakeland Wildlife Oasis, across the moss from Burton on the A6 has been badly flooded, and is needing help with the clean up and repairs. 

This is a small place, doing important conservation work. This is the park where the globally endangered and rare Snow Leopards cubs were born in May 2014.  One of the two cubs has left to join a breeding programme elsewhere, whilst the other is still at LWO awaiting paperwork which will allow him to move to another breeding programme.

As well as practical help (details when we have them later) they have launched an appeal to raise £5000.

After the Deluge - the Spirit of Cumbria

What a stressful time it has been thanks to Storm Desmond. Here is Burton we escaped relatively lightly. A few wet cellars, some flooded and damaged roads, and a collapsed wall or two, but nothing on the scale of the communities around us. 

Seeing many places under feet of water is so shocking. It's hard to imagine what it is like living in a street where the flood water comes up to your chest, or where the West Coast Main Line is under eight feet of flood water.

Some 5,000 homes across the county have been flooded, which means all those families are now either staying with friends and relatives or have taken shelter on one of the refuges around the county.

The assistance given by the emergency services, by volunteers from organisations such as RNLI, Bay Search and Rescue, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the mountain rescue teams and many others, plus the support given by the Army, has been invaluable. They have worked tirelessly since the Storm began, and everyone in the county owes a huge debt of gratitude to them all.  Without them it would have been so much worse.

Aid has also come from all over the country. Kind people throughout the UK have been contacting local groups, offering clothing, bedding, Christmas gifts, food and drink, and much more besides, to those who have lost so much in the floods. Their generosity is overwhelming and much appreciated.

It will take millions of pounds to effect repairs to all of the properties damaged, to mend all the roads ripped up or washed away, to replace the bridges destroyed. Just cleaning the mud and water out and disposing of damaged items will be a huge task. Kendal Lions have provided a huge quantity of cleaning materials for those affected in Kendal. Supermarkets ASDA and Morrisons have been sending food and clothing to the refuges. Hundreds of local businesses have offered help without being asked. The community spirit is strong in Cumbria, but it will take more to rebuild our towns and villages.

The Cumbria Foundation's Cumbria 2015 Flood Appeal was launched over the weekend, and has, as of today, raised more than £500,000 towards its target of £2 million, which will go to help anyone in the county who needs help as a result of the flooding.

Burton helping quake victims in Nepal

Coffee Morning and Bring'n'Buy Sale in aid of the Nepal Quake Victims, Burton Memorial Hall.

There will be a home-made cakes stall (Yum!), Bring and Buy, coffee and cake, and live music! 

The event is in aid of DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) and the Mission Aviation Fellowship, to support their work in Nepal after the recent devastating earthquakes.

HELP NEEDED! BURTON RECREATION TRUST IN CRISIS

BRT exists to manage the outdoor recreation facilities behind the Royal Hotel. The present Chairman and Secretary are no longer able to carry out their roles due to family commitments and are appealing for new Trustees to step forward and assist in the managing of the facility. The Trust is non-profit making but it must raise enough funds annually to run the facility and maintain a ‘sinking fund’ to cover larger replacement costs.

The roles are not onerous and can be very rewarding, especially where there a few willing helpers to assist. We have Tennis Club members who take on the bookings and the cleaning of the facilities and we always get a number of ‘regular’ and other volunteers to help at the annual 10K and Fun run. This annual event is the main fundraiser and we desperately need help to run it this year.

If no-one comes forward in May, then very sadly, the Trust will revert to the Charities Commission and BRT will cease to exist – the lease will foreclose – and once it’s gone, then it’s gone.

Since it’s opening, some 15 years ago, other villages have built their own Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGAs) and we do not get the bookings that we used to do. Nonetheless, it is an important village asset and we are lucky indeed to have such a facility right in the centre of the village – please let’s not lose it.

The next event in aid of Hall funds is a Fashion Show on Thursday 23rd April, 7pm.  Tickets on sale at Burton Village Store!

Superfast fibre broadband finally hits Burton!

Great excitement this week as we heard that Burton village can now get superfast fibre broadband. Holme, on the same exchange, has been able to get it for a few weeks now.

We've been checking and it seems that most of Burton village itself has the status message "accepting orders", and fibre certainly gets as far as the kennels on Station Lane.

Holme Mills is "fibre to cabinet but cabinet not yet taking orders so keep checking", Hilderstone is "accepting orders", but Burtlands/Station Inn and out to Moss House Farm are all returning "exploring solutions".

The houses at the very top of Vicarage Lane, Dalton, are also "exploring solutions". 

Dalton Hall Business Centre and Stable Yard areas are "accepting orders", as is Clawthorpe.

If you are not sure if your line is fibre-possible, do use the checker to see (BT lines only) or contact your telephone provider and ask them directly.   

King's Barn opens officially!

There was great excitement tonight in the King's Arms, with the official opening of the King's Barn accommodation. Extra en-suite bedrooms have been created within the revamped former storage barn, with one having full disabled access and a wet-room, along with an en-suite linked room adjoining suitable for a carer or family.

The rooms can serve as twin beds or wide doubles, with ample hanging space for clothes,a hospitality tray, and en suite facilities including showers and baths.

Cosily warm and tastefully decorated, the rooms are just across the courtyard from the main building and have easy access from the adjacent car park.

Live Music at the King's this Friday

This Friday, 6th February,  sees the welcome return to the King's Arms, Burton, of the awesome Mickey Jupp and Mo Witham. From around 9pm the duo will be performing a range of songs, many of which were written by Mickey himself, along with some other old favourite tunes.  Come along and enjoy some good live music in our friendly local!

"Northern Lights spectacular expected in Cumbria tonight" says Gazette

Cumbria could be in for a rare treat tonight, if the skies stay clear, as large parts of the country may see spectacular Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) after massive emissions from the sun reach the earth's atmosphere.

Burton's 37th Annual Onion Show is this Sunday!

Sunday 6th October sees this year's annual Onion Show taking place at the Kings Arms at Burton in Kendal.

For 37 years the annual Onion Show has raised money for Burton Children's Sports Committee, which organises the annual village bonfire night and fireworks, family discos, and the annual sports day and carnival parade.

Wheels 4 Alex Quiz Sheets on sale NOW!

The Wheels 4 Alex Quiz Sheets are now on sale, price £1 each. Each sheet has 50 questions - 46 of them have a connection with the word Alex, the remaining 4 have a connection with the word wheels - it's up to you to work it which is which and answer the questions. Each answer has an indication of the number of words needed for it. Some you'll know immediately, some may need a wee bit of thinking about, and a few will tax your little grey cells! If you get stuck, the answers to every question may be found by using internet search engines, so don't despair!!!

The quiz sheets need to be returned to us by 1st December, 2013, and there are small cash prizes for the first three all correct entries out of the hat. All profits from the quiz (that is all sales minus the prize monies) are going to the Wheels for Alex Campaign Appeal in aid of the new powered outdoor wheelchair for Alex Doherty. Wheels for Alex Campaign - Please Help!

The Wheels 4 Alex Campaign has launched, with the aim of raising £9,000 to buy Alex, who has Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, a Boma 7 Off-road Wheelchair.

Five years ago, Burton in Kendal villager Alex Doherty was diagnosed with Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 44.  At that time, this father of two young children had his own business as a Professional Outdoor Activities Instructor, working, among other things with companies to encourage teambuilding. He was a highly active person who enjoyed climbing, mountaineering and adventure holidays in his spare time. The effect of this devastating disease has been shockingly rapid over the last five years. Alex is doing everything ‘he can’ to slow down this progression but he is now barely able to use his legs, so we are asking for your help in the Wheels for Alex Campaign, to raise £9,000 to buy Alex some wheels!

Protest of Flowers at War Memorials

Families with former and serving members of the armed forces placed flowers at the Burton war memorial today, in memory of Drummer Lee Rigby, the soldier murdered in Woolwich on 22 May 2013.

The murder of Lee Rigby, a serving soldier, in Woolwich on 22 May 2013, sent a shock wave through the country, especially within families who have members serving in the military forces. By placing flowers at every war memorial throughout the country we hope to show both that we support our armed service personnel wherever they may be based, and that terrorism in any form will not bring us down.

Children's Sports Day rained off

How sad that, after a few days of fine sunny and warm weather, the cold and wet returned today, causing the abandonment of the annual children's sports day races and stalls today (Spring Bank Holiday Monday). After all the hard work and planning by the sports committee the SPACE-themed parade made its way round the village before the clouds gathered again, the rain poured down, and races were stopped. The stall holders battled on awhile, but by 2.30pm they had accepted the inevitable and were packing everything away.

Some damp Daleks lay in a trailer, the TARDIS was parked on someone's driveway, and the chairs and tables were loaded back into vans for their return trip to the Memorial Hall. Lots of the younger men from the village were out doing a sterling job in horrible conditions, whilst some of the mums and kids sheltered on the bowling pavilion terrace, whilst others had given up and gone home.

Those looking after the still well-stocked burger and bun stall were planning how to migrate it all over to the Hall for tonight's family disco, whilst the team with the stop-me-and-buy-a-coffee bicycle stall were tipping water off their canopy before heading for a drier place. This is such a busy and popular event, and it's sad when it's rained off like this, but at least everyone will have this evening's family disco to look forward to in the Memorial Hall... and there may be a few burgers going too!

Oh what a night!

I make no apologies for stealing a song title to describe last night's gig at the Kings Arms in Burton, as it was such a fab night of music and songs.

Southend's finest (who are both now Cumbrian residents), Mickey Jupp and Mo Witham played for almost 3 hours in the bar, getting through a 3-part set list of some 25 songs, many of which were written by Mickey himself.

People came from near and far to listen, there were even fans from London, the Midlands and Ireland! Mickey and Mo clearly enjoyed the intimate atmosphere of the bar, as well as the excellent beer, and the audience obviously enjoyed their performance!

For anyone who missed the night, never fear, as Mickey and Mo will be back - they are taking part in an event later this year in the Memorial Hall - more details will be available soon.

A little bird tells us that the Kings Arms Christmas decorations and lights are going to be spectacular this year. It may cause a spike in the National Grid's power drain when they switch on, but surely they will cheer everyone up and bring a smile to even the more dour of faces these cold December days and nights?

Leaflets for the various candidates are slowly going out, but it's a mammoth task covering the whole of the county, so if you've not had information about the candidates, why not pop along to the Choose My PCC website (set up by the Home Office) http://www.choosemypcc.org.uk/candidates/area/cumbria where you can find summaries of each candidate and their election addresses.

Who are Cumbria's Police Commissioner Candidates?

The Polling Station for Burton is Burton Memorial Hall, and voters on the list should have received a Poll Card through the post by now. It's especially useful to watch the video they have provided, which explains you can vote for two candidates - a first choice and a second choice, so that's one X in each of the two columns on the ballot paper.

Once elected, the Police and Crime Commissioner will serve until May 2016, a term of 3½ years.

The Electoral Commission has produced a booklet about the election of the Police & Crime Commissioners, a copy of which should be delivered to every household before the 2nd November. Election or non-event? You choose!

Why does the Home Office think that having the information about candidates for the Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections on Thursday 15 November should only be available after October 26th? Isn't that getting a bit late in the day? It's certainly too late for village newsletters like Burton News, which are published monthly, to carry it in their November issue.

Also, today is the first that I've heard an advert on local radio (Lakeland Radio) about these elections. The information is online, but not everyone has access to the internet still or wants it in that format, but if you want printed info you have to ring up and ask for it. (You can phone now on 0800 107 0708 and pre-order a printed copy.) Which begs the question, if you don't hear or read an advert telling you this, how would you know that you can ask for it?!

The election of Police & Crime Commissioners is the biggest change in the way police forces are managed for decades and yet it's being carried out in a less than voter-friendly manner. An election taking place in November seems destined to attract a low turn-out - dark nights are never an encouragement for voters to turn out, and the Electoral Reform Society is predicting a turn-out of around 18.5% as against a more usual 60%+ for a general election. How is this democratic? How will the person elected reflect the electorate with such a low turn-out?

In Cumbria there are 4 candidates standing. Whichever of them gets the most votes, it still means that the most powerful person in policing in Cumbria would have been elected by a minority of the electorate.

The PCC will have the power to set out the crime plan for the county, set the budget and precept for the county police force, and hire and fire the chief constable and the deputy chief constable. These are huge powers, and they should be in the hands of (preferably) a non-political elected police authority or of a commissioner who is elected by a majority of the electorate, not just by the votes of the few who realise how important these elections really are.

Burton Onion Show Sun 7th Oct

Sunday 7th October is the Annual Onion Show here in Burton-in-Kendal. It is held in the Kings Arms Hotel on Main Street, and entries for classes are accepted from 10am until 12 noon. Judging starts at noon, and all entries will be auctioned, starting at 2pm, along with an Auction of Promises.This year the proceeds of the Onion Show will be split, in the main, between Burton Children's Sports Committee and the Burton First Responders: two great village causes.  Other local causes will receive a donation.

CraftMarket 2012 - what a weekend!

What an amazing weekend we had at CraftMarket 2012! Saturday was busy all day, Sunday suffered a bit from the horrible cold, windy and torrentially wet weather, but everyone who came said how much they enjoyed it, and how fabulous all the crafts on sale were. The catering by Rachel and Jo-Anne - the Vintage Village Hall team - was delicious, and much praised during and after the event.
