So can we introduce you to Kirstie Pelling's new novel, hot off the press: "Life's a Catastrophe". It's funny, it's romantic, it has cats, and it's a will they... won't they... sort of tale (or should that be tail?!) The story is quirky, lots of amusing moments, some "oh gosh" moments when Aly did something that didn't seem like a good idea (we can all be wise from a distance or in hindsight eh?!), and overall it was well-written and an easy comfortable read. I'm looking forward to seeing what Kirstie's next book, due in November, is.<br /><br />P.S. Villagers with long memories may recall her amusing articles for <a href="https://www.burtonnews.org.uk" target="_blank">Burton News</a> too.<br /><br />Buy now from <a href="https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Lifes-Catastrophe-laugh-out-loud-romantic-comedy-ebook/dp/B09KN7MRR1/" target="_blank">Amazon</a></p><div class="" data-block="true" data-editor="88sl4" data-offset-key="o76s-0-0" style="background-color: #eaeef6; color: #333333; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px;"></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6984259285777934961.post-43511459685842616672022-01-16T20:58:00.012+00:002022-12-12T21:05:14.897+00:00Local Authors: Alan Hubbard - "I'm Alan Hubbard, Who Are You?"<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkaTa6bcEt-vjt8Avwz0eCXseQlCb5DQQI_FGSITYBfnEr70z1bYnS8LEUBvMNxu_mSqBUASxXk5V6hqu5Dw3C0dhO8t-H__1_M-8hVXMPAUaKPUjYIWBflBHHivkNsAM0L4DV717hvaS-uzhbrztpSELy_GupFQAVWvSvXd1RXrEXpGQ8gjVjNnw8Cw/s900/Im_Alan_Hubbard_book_front_cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkaTa6bcEt-vjt8Avwz0eCXseQlCb5DQQI_FGSITYBfnEr70z1bYnS8LEUBvMNxu_mSqBUASxXk5V6hqu5Dw3C0dhO8t-H__1_M-8hVXMPAUaKPUjYIWBflBHHivkNsAM0L4DV717hvaS-uzhbrztpSELy_GupFQAVWvSvXd1RXrEXpGQ8gjVjNnw8Cw/s320/Im_Alan_Hubbard_book_front_cover.jpg" width="213" /></a> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4vbboW2oq2wZMEHZYQl7Joq1v8Rv994hPo64wuSZeTULW_wRIkfSUogB84yiaA2JWdxcqCet8FljWjFJ2G-CnKhCtpD7eCrnc-CrjFUbgK_elpC0icYYfgb_M0rspS1EgHanwtaVBxOIihHOHNn0ZBMP_J-74pd3HqCoBqaMY1m-4kOVRgECefoPh0Q/s900/Im_Alan_Hubbard_book_back_cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4vbboW2oq2wZMEHZYQl7Joq1v8Rv994hPo64wuSZeTULW_wRIkfSUogB84yiaA2JWdxcqCet8FljWjFJ2G-CnKhCtpD7eCrnc-CrjFUbgK_elpC0icYYfgb_M0rspS1EgHanwtaVBxOIihHOHNn0ZBMP_J-74pd3HqCoBqaMY1m-4kOVRgECefoPh0Q/s320/Im_Alan_Hubbard_book_back_cover.jpg" width="213" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I've known <b>Alan Hubbard</b> for a long time, he's a near neighbour of ours, so when I heard that he has written his life story, <b><i>"I'm Alan Hubbard, who are you?"</i></b> I felt I had to read it. The book is a chunky tome: some 337 pages, and is peppered with an assortment of colour and black and white photographs illustrating Alan's life.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The introduction to the book says,<i> "Growing up during the second world war in Salford, being at the same school as actor Albert Finney and artist Harold Riley, a climbing contemporary of Joe Brown, Don Whillans and Chris Bonington – none of whom knew him, Alan Hubbard tells his own story of a nobody. It spans eight decades and counting of turbulent change. Status, wealth, letters after names, reputations don’t automatically impress him – respect must be earned. Politicians and public school alumni are treated with suspicion but not written off. Authority has its place but not necessarily over him. A free spirit has his say."</i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">That, as anyone who knows Alan will agree, sums him up nicely. He's an opinionated octogenarian who has seen much, done more, and lived a life full of challenge and adventure. From the poignancy of his childhood with a widowed mother and his siblings, to the challenge of scaling Lumpy Ridge in Colorado, via a wartime childhood in the bombsites of Salford and being offered a trial at Darwen FC as a teenager, his life was never dull. He saw from a young age the unfairness caused by wealth and privilege, along with the benefit of hard work and a determined attitude, which helped shape his political views - views which he is never shy of sharing with anyone and everyone.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It's a fascinating book - I picked it up and browsed the first page or so to get a feel for it, and before I realised it I was at the end of the first chapter - each time I had a coffee break I picked it up and read another chapter, immersing myself in a life well-lived and well-remembered. I can highly recommend it as a very good read, regardless of whether or not you agree with him politically.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">You can buy direct from Alan via his website <a href="https://www.alanhubbardauthor.co.uk/" target="_blank">I'm Alan Hubbard, Who Are You?</a> or online from <a href="https://www.waterstones.com/book/im-alan-hubbard-who-are-you/alan-hubbard/9781800491403" target="_blank">Waterstones Books</a>. </div></div><p><br /></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comBurton-in-Kendal, Carnforth LA6, UK54.184523 -2.72003733.275902662186731 -37.876287 75.093143337813274 32.436213tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6984259285777934961.post-47639901093455810502020-05-19T22:05:00.001+01:002020-08-28T19:01:06.075+01:00Make your own online jigsawsFor a bit of fun whilst we are in lockdown due to COVID-19 still, I'm going to create some online jigsaws using some of my photos of views around the village. Over the past 3 weeks we have had donations which have filled numerous boxes with essentials and a few little luxuries for the families supported by the Morecambe Bay food bank.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZLiX9a8JVDWVoBRS-4oahFk7DuA8eWC4pme4MJkP_NVnJPeHFlHPA5-iSABA0lrbsfKVDuYmcA85klA4HzEcYZQRyBwrQBkBBcNzkSRP0SAbw-O4SNeaxM4WqKMfnXBptm2bWU2JVlskN/s1600/Morecambe_Foodbank_box.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="561" data-original-width="800" height="224" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZLiX9a8JVDWVoBRS-4oahFk7DuA8eWC4pme4MJkP_NVnJPeHFlHPA5-iSABA0lrbsfKVDuYmcA85klA4HzEcYZQRyBwrQBkBBcNzkSRP0SAbw-O4SNeaxM4WqKMfnXBptm2bWU2JVlskN/s320/Morecambe_Foodbank_box.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Along with the other communities that collect for MBFB we have amassed 5.4 tonnes of produce over the past three weeks. That's an astonishing amount being donated by people from all across the collection area, and the food bank team have sent us all their thanks for our, and your, efforts and your kindness in making this happen. <br />
<br />
You can see how the collection process works in this timelapse video from our neighbouring collectors at Holme. <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1R5PZ-LjFF4-xCeA0xeaf0uWrzPxcxJeX/view?usp=sharing">Morecambe Bay Food Bank time lapse video</a><br />
<br />
Our boxes are collected every Wednesday by the food bank van, and donations can be left in any of them any day during daylight hours. Thank you for your support!<br />

<br />
We received <b>16kg of donated foods in 24 hours</b>, which is fabulous, thank you to everyone who donated to the box. The contents have been collected by the Food Bank van today, so we now have a whole week to collect before the next collection. I wonder what the coming week will bring?<br />
<br />
Just for comparison, our neighbours in Holme village a mile away collected 128.5 kg for the Food Bank, so we've a way to go to catch up, but knowing the generosity of this village I am sure we'll manage it.<br />
<br />
Please continue to leave your donations, the Food Bank needs them now more than ever, on average they are sending out 3 tonnes a day to needy families in the Morecambe Bay Food Bank area.<br />
<br />
